Five Tastes is Fuchsia Dunlop’s latest cookbook, and the first to feature illustration throughout. I was honored to create an extensive body of work across the book, from chapter openers and spot illustrations to spreads that extend and interact with Yuki Sugiura’s beautiful food photography, building a visual world rooted in Fuchsia’s own kitchen.

Five Tastes

When people in ancient China spoke of the “five tastes”, they meant not only the five tastes recognized in Chinese gastronomy — sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty — but also, more broadly, all the ingredients and flavors at a cook’s disposal. A chef was seen almost as a magician, able to harness the virtues of the five tastes and bring them into harmony in a dish.
