What could be more meaningful for a designer who grew up in China than creating something to celebrate Chinese New Year? With an open brief to develop a concept centered around the snake and to feature the hulu (gourd), this series highlights the joy and festive spirit of the Year of the Snake with a modern take.

01
Patterns of Tradition

The first animation draws inspiration from traditional Chinese motifs such as Hakka walled villages, eaves, and the prosperous double-coin knot. It features dynamic patterns that seamlessly transition into visuals celebrating the spirit of Chinese New Year.

02
Echoes of Celebration

The second animation brings the vibrant sounds of Chinese New Year to life, capturing the festive atmosphere through a harmonious blend of sound and visuals.

Drums beat steadily, firecrackers burst into blossoms, and delicate paper cuttings flutter gently. The soft hum of window lattices adds a subtle rhythm, weaving these traditional sounds into a rich symphony of celebration.

03
Journey of Renewal

The third animation features traditional lanterns and fish-shaped lanterns, with the fish lanterns drawing inspiration from the centuries-old heritage of Wangmantian Village. A winding snake glides gracefully through the mountains, its movement mirrored by mountain contours that resemble snake skin patterns.

Shapes dance, perspectives sway. See the world anew as shapes shift magically with perspective. We settled on a fun concept: revealing hidden circles in everyday objects.

“Circles” is a short animation created for Dreams, Procreate’s new animation software. Procreate has revolutionized digital art on the iPad, and we were honored to be invited to showcase the various capabilities of Dreams before its official launch.

This year’s App Store Earth Day features a match and merge game. When players collect enough tokens, a tree will be planted in real life. Our animation celebrates the collective impact of many players coming together to support global reforestation.

To complete the loop, the central tree begins to dissolve as its form breaks down into scattered saplings across the grid, creating a poetic nod to the life cycle of nature.
